Chelsea vs Malmo Info
Date: Thursday February 21 2019
Kick-off time: 5.55pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Chelsea may have won the first leg last week, but they weren’t overly convincing, while the fact that they only hold a sing-goal aggregate lead means that the tie is still in the balance. After their exploits in Sweden, the Blues disappointed in front of a home crowd when going out of FA Cup with a whimper on Monday night, as they failed to put up much of a fight when losing by two goals to nil against Manchester United.
Chelsea have won five of their last six home games in all competitions. They lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the FA Cup despite dominating possession and shots at goal but the Red Devils are far tougher opponents than Malmo.
Maurizio Sarri’s men proved as much when they beat Malmo 2-1 in the away leg last week even though the Blues are generally better at home than on the road. The odds are unsurprisingly short on a Blues victory on Thursday.
Malmo should also fancy themselves to make offensive headway in this match. The Swedish outfit failed to resist defensively last week, but they created plenty going forward, as they clocked a more than respectable 1.63 expected goals for. With Chelsea likely to attack in their own patch, the visitors should be able to play on the counter, which is a tactic that served them well a week ago.
Malmo had been out of competitive action for just over two months before their 2-1 first leg defeat to Chelsea. They followed that up by scraping past second-tier Degerfors 3-2 in the Svenska Cupen on Sunday.
Uwe Rosler’s charges won just one of their last four away matches in the 2018 Allsvenskan. Travelling to Stamford Bridge is likely to be a tougher task than facing Swedish opponents away.
