AFCON 2019, one of the most intriguing and surprising AFCON in recent times has come down to semi. The men have been separated from the boys. It’s now down to four teams to compete for the AFCON 2019 trophy.
This year’s tournament has surprise packages. Football minors like Madagascar is the surprise team of the tournament going all the way to quarter-finals against all odds. They defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Burundi (tournament first timers) and DR Congo and drew Guinea.
We have also seen South Africa knock out the host, The Pharaohs of Egypt, Benin Republic Ousting the Atlas Lions of Morocco. What a Tournament! Surely more surprises will awaits.
Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia and Senegal are the last four standing heading to semi-finals where Nigeria face Algeria and Senegal will take on Tunisia.
Who amongst these teams will take home the AFCON 2019 trophy?
The Desert Foxes of Algeria seems to be the favorite at this stage having displayed solid performances throughout the tournament. The desert foxes demolished Guinea in the round of 16 and edged past Ivory Coast (another strong contender) in the quarter-finals through penalties.
They managed to score six goals and conceded none in group stages (100%). With players like Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani, Yacine Brahimi, Sofiane Feghouli and Faouzi Ghoulam pulling the strings they will surely stake their claim on the title but first they need to stop the Super eagles of Nigeria who seem to be finding their rhythm.
Super eagles have what it takes to claim the trophy but they need to up their game and remain compact at the back if they stand any chance of stop the rampant attack of the Desert foxes of Algeria.
The Youngerster Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi of Arsenal will make the difference. I see Algeria edging pass the Nigerian counter parts. Reason: Brilliant attack of Algeria and Sloppy defending of the Super Eagles. Whoever emerges victorious from this fixture will go on to lift the trophy.
The Teranga Lions of Senegal see this as the opportunity to lift the trophy which they have never won.
They are the only team among the last four teams in AFCON 2019 that have not lifted the trophy.
The Teranga Lions have enough fire power to outclass the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.
The Carthage Eagles have been less potent in-front of goal with the exception of 3:0 demolishing of Madagascar which was their first match won in open play.
Tunisia drew all their group matches scoring 2 and conceding two in the process. They went ahead to beat Ghana in penalties after a stalemate.
